Editions of the Doctrine and Covenants
The Doctrine and Covenants is a rich and evolving scripture within the Latter Day Saint movement, with numerous editions reflecting the theological, cultural, and organizational shifts experienced by its various traditions. These editions, published by different denominations and groups, offer unique perspectives on faith, governance, and doctrine. Exploring them is not about finding a “right” or “wrong” interpretation but rather understanding the diverse ways in which communities of faith have engaged with this sacred text over time.
Engaging with the history and development of these editions can be an illuminating and challenging experience. Readers may encounter moments that raise difficult questions about historicity, changes in doctrine, or the evolving nature of revelation. These moments of discomfort are not uncommon and can be an invitation to deeper reflection on faith, history, and the ways we understand scripture.
We invite you to explore the various editions with an open heart and mind, recognizing that this journey is as much about understanding the past as it is about shaping a thoughtful and inclusive faith in the present.
Historical Editions
The Historical Editions of the Doctrine and Covenants are those directly compiled or influenced by Joseph Smith, Jr., the founder of the Latter Day Saint movement. These editions, including the Book of Commandments (1833) and the Doctrine and Covenants (1835 and 1844), capture the earliest revelations and organizational principles of the church as understood and penned by its prophet. They reflect the foundational period of the movement, offering insight into its early theology, governance, and evolving vision of Zion. Exploring these editions reveals the origins of a faith tradition that continues to inspire and challenge its adherents today. These editions have been established by academic sources as well as Mormon Studies historians.

Modern Nondenominational Editions
The Modern Language Abridged Edition of the Doctrine and Covenants is a contemporary retelling of the earliest revelations of Joseph Smith, Jr., inspired by the original editions. Simplified and rephrased for modern readers, it seeks to capture the spirit and intent of the revelations while presenting them in clear, accessible language, much like The Message does for the Bible. This edition is designed to make the core teachings and principles of the Doctrine and Covenants more approachable, offering a fresh perspective for those exploring the foundations of the Latter Day Saint movement. This is only the first 112 sections of the Doctrine and Covenants.
